    Default Time of day?

    Hi Meg!

So I'm curious what is your favorite time of day to shoot?

I'm moving out of a subdivision to 5 acres in the country in 1 month and every time I see your outdoor pictures it gets me more and more exited to get out of the subdivision! I'm so looking forward to learning the light of a new house and exploring our property with my kids (camera in tow)

I love to shoot during the golden hour in the morning and evening outside. I'm a morning person so we often get outside early. In the evening though is when I often capture warm, soft light. We were just outside this even in a nearby meadow and the light was gorgeous and golden. There is an app you can download that's called Magic Hour and it will track the magic hour for you in the morning and evening. I used to use it but now I just check my weather app to see what time the sun is going to set and aim for around that time

Meg, Is there a particular time of the day that you do your indoor shoots?

Meg, how do you do with your kids in summertime that the sunrise is really early and the sunset very late? I love the light from your pics. Unfortunately, I am not a morning person : (
And when you photograph other families, do you also shoot at those time of the day or during the day as well?
I went to the beach in February with my husband and my daughter and the earliest I was able to take pictures was around 9 am.. the 3 of us looked like if we just walked up and we were covered in suncream so we look a little bit shiny...

Hi Diem! Nope for indoor I will shoot at anytime. There are certain rooms I prefer to photograph my boys in depending on the time of day though. For instance I love to shoot in our dining room in the morning because the sun shines through a couple of our large windows and often creates pockets of light.

I know most ppl are going to think I'm crazy for saying this but summer is my least favorite season and it's not just because of the early sunrises and late sunsets! I don't do well in warm weather haha. In the summer I'm not often able to photograph my children during the golden hour because they are sleeping. If I'm lucky we sneak out in the early morning because (with the exception of one of my children) we are all early risers. I prefer to have outdoor family sessions during the golden hour as well but again it's often hard to schedule those in the middle of the summer with little children. I often have to settle with close to golden hour

How do you take the photos with the boys in pockets of light without it being completely black everywhere else?

That just depends on the light. For instance if the pocket of light shining on my subject through a window is soft, then I"m not going to have as much contrast and dark shadows as I would with light that is harsh and directly shining on my subject. Does that make sense?
