Prompt Examples

  • Prompt Examples

If you used a prompt when photographing your subject please post your example here.

Example: Yesterday was a gloomy day (my favorite). I took my oldest to a nearby pond. He was playing with the weeds so I asked him to tell me if the weed felt soft. The reason I love this image is because it's not so static and forced. I also love his dirty hands... signs of spring!

I loved this section of the breakout! As I have used prompts with my kids it has allowed me to connect with my kids while I am shooting. My favorite images are the ones where I feel like I have made a connection with my kids or shared a special moment with them like the one below.

I took this image this morning in the fog. We originally went to the pond to see the ducks but when I saw the fog over the water I wanted to get a close up of my daughter. I picked up a pine cone and asked my daughter what it was? She took the pine cone from me and answered "it is dirty!" She ended up seeing a rock full of water and spent the next 15 minutes washing pine cones in her make believe sink. During her play I asked a lot of follow up questions/prompts: Is the water cold or hot? Are your pine cones clean?

This is so beautiful Heather. I love how timeless this feels and the beautiful reflections in the water. It's very calming. I'm so glad you shared your experience. This is one of my favorite things about prompts because it does engage you with your children in a special way. I always find that my children end up saying something funny that I want to write down during experiences like this too.

I set my little guy on the shelf by the basement window that I used the other day. He was really freaked out that he would fall off - my climber scared of something because he didn't do it himself. I told him to look out the window and count the spiders..then to see if they had bugs on their webs. I love asking questions to kids to get them engaged with something and forgetting about taking pictures. Sometimes it just takes me a little bit to find the right thing to ask or suggest to get them going.

This weekend, I was trying to get my daughter to look out the window and smile. So, I asked her a ridiculous question: "Is there an elephant in the tree?" Without missing a beat, she looked at me with a puzzled look and asked in reply, "Is the elephant big?" My prompt didn't get the reaction I was looking for, however, it was a reaction that still makes me laugh. I'm so glad I was able to capture that exact moment...such a genuine (and unexpected) look on her face. She may be my silliest daughter (a title she proudly claims), but it often takes more effort to get her to smile for the camera. However, even in the midst of not smiling, she says and does such silly (unexpected) things to make people laugh. So...here is my image of a prompt that didn't go quite as expected.

Stunning Laura! What a beautiful landscape and I love that you caught him in a natural moment. I love the center composition here! It's perfect.

I was folding laundry and saw this patch of light. I just set the basket in it and mentioned it to my son... he was all in... literally!  I am LOVING this breakout so much. I have never played with lowlight on purpose. Less because of fear, more because I hadn't thought to as much. I am having so much fun with it so thank you Meg!

My 14-year-old won't let me take pics of him, but he loves doing magic tricks (and he's really good, too!). I asked him to show me some card magic and he let me take pics.

We were at the beach and I wanted to get a shot of my son looking out at the ocean. There were some boats just to the left of the frame and I asked him to count how many there were so he would look out and stand still. I didn't want the boats in the picture so I tried to position myself to exclude them. I feel like I always have to use prompts lately. My son is about to turn five and has decided he doesn't like to have his picture taken, so I'm constantly trying to distract him!

I love the movement here Beth as well as your stunning conversion. Your example is a wonderful way of capturing older children. By asking them to take their photo doing something they love it's not only fun for all but I think it builds trust and appreciation between parent and child. <3 Thank you so much for sharing!

Your colors in this are beautiful Stephanie! I love the contrasting blue and red. I can completely relate regarding the prompts. My oldest is about to turn 5. It works really well though capturing them naturally. Thank you so much for sharing!
