Here are two images taken the other day of my youngest sleeping. There's actually a ton of light in his room (2 large windows) and I still haven't purchased curtains for his room. Before laying him down I went and hung a couple blankets to block most of the light. I only allowed a small sliver of light in right next to his crib. I'll snap a pullback a little later today so you can see my setup. This is one of my favorite perspectives because of the sense of scale. I also love how the lines in the crib lead your eye to him. I ended up preferring the first image over the second because his face is turned towards the light. <3

I'm interested to see the pullback. I think in earlier images, the end of the crib is right at the edge of a window?

On it! I'll take a pullback shortly. I move furniture a lot.  the crib was on the edge of the window but for this shot I knew I wanted some natural light shining through the crib bars so it would light his face. I just slid the crib a tad forward.

My 3 year old daughter LOVES to help out in the kitchen. If anything is happening, she is right there with her step stool asking what she can do too. So when she asked to help wash strawberries for dinner, I said yes and immediately grabbed my camera. I'm wishing I had cleared the counters behind her a little more, but I wasn't sure how long the moment would last. I'm guessing this is flat light since the window is right above the sink?

Love this Karen! The light here is stunning. One thing you can do about the background is use the burn tool to darken some of the distractions. I really don't think they are noticeable though. My eye goes immediately to her face. In regards to flat light, this would be flat light if you were up on the counter getting a front portrait of her because she's facing the window, but because you are off to the side you are getting nice shadows on the side of her face. So glad you shared this moment!

Thank you for sharing the tips and pullback image, Meg. Were you standing on something to capture it with such height over head?

Yes I was. I also stopped down to make sure my son was in focus. I think my aperture was around 3.2.

Meg, I loved that you posted the pullback. That is so helpful. I get it so much quicker when I can actually see things like that! Here is my first attempt at finding light in my house that I hadn't noticed before and using it in an image. My goal is crisp and clear images but I feel like this one is a little muddy. If you don't mind me asking, how do you achieve the crispness but keep the warmth?

Hi Megan! I love your image. Beautiful light  I hope you don't mind but I pulled your image into LR to take a closer look at it. One thing I did was bring down the exposure and highlights a little... specifically on your daughters face. WB was also a little cool so I warmed it up a tiny bit by bumping my temp slider in LR. I also increased the blacks, shadows and contrast a little bit more. I then pulled this into Photoshop, used the twins green action by Beth wade, and the mystery overlay by Jessica Drossin (it adds warmth) to your image too. This is what I came up with. I think bringing down the exposure some and adding more warmth makes her pop a little more.

Thank you so much! I will be grabbing that action for sure! I am thrilled you tweaked it and added the information of what you did. I really appreciate you spending the time doing that and explaining it too. Thank you!

Hi i'm still playing catch up here. I started late however I just finished the pdf and am looking forward to viewing the videos. I'm curious I know you said the mystery action added warmth , what does the twins green action do?

By the way I love the before and after. It was a great photo to begin with but I love how Megan applied her signature style to it and explained the steps. Its one of the many reasons I'm glad I signed up for this.

My youngest wanted some yogurt this morning. After she had a major meltdown (because I gave her what she clearly asked for...that's the stage we're in right now), she finally decided to eat it. And I decided to try capture that moment. This is such a common scene in our kitchen. I wish I was able to get better catchlights in her eyes. There is a tiny one in her one eye. (The other eye was somewhat hidden by her spoon.) I just couldn't angle her toward the light enough to get better catchlights at that moment. About an hour later, she got into the wipes and decided to clean our windows (window screens) in our living room. She loves cleaning right now with wipes. (Is there any chance that her love for cleaning will last???)

Here is my "everyday" image. My eldest almost burst with pride when I asked him if he'd read a story to his little sister. He immediately ran into his room to get a book and jumped on our bed which was just in the middle of being changed... The moment didn't last very long but long enough for me to take couple of nice images. Very grainy even at ISO 320. New camera needed  sorry about the watermark!

Hi there! Thank you so much for your kind words. The twins green action removes specifically any unwanted green casting. I love my images to be on the warmer side. The twins green does a beautiful job of specifically removing any unwanted green from skin.

I hope for both our sakes that this cleaning stage lasts!  I love your shares. I have one of my middle son eating yogurt and he was covered in it. Your daughter is adorable! Is there anyway she could sit on the other side of the table? I see that the light is coming from behind her. That might be one way to get better catchlights. And I can completely relate to the challenges of working with toddlers  I LOVE the reflection and composition in your second image.

I love this everyday moment! Did she dress herself? She's darling. You are getting beautiful light here. I love the shadows on the right side of her face. Thank you so much for sharing!

Love this! I'm a big fan of this peeking in perspective. It really tells a story. I don't notice the grain at all. The soft light here is gorgeous too. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you so much, Meg! I appreciate your feedback so much! I actually didn't notice the reflection in the second image until I saw it on my computer...and it quickly became one of my favorite parts of the image.  And now I'm trying to think about how to strategically rearrange the seats at our kitchen table for better catchlights.  There is a sliding door on the wall behind my youngest. My middle daughter recently decided to move to the other side of the table so that she would be across the table from my toddler (rather than right next to her). My toddler liked trying to reach over (even while strapped into a booster seat) to steal my middle daughter's food during meal times. Apparently, my middle daughter decided she didn't want to deal with that anymore.  I'll at least be able to get catchlights in the eyes of my older daughters...or when my youngest hops up into one of their seats to try cause some kind of "adventure".
