We just moved to a new house, and the light fixtures and curtains were straight up 1994, so we have wood blinds and/or sheers covering most of the windows for now.

Default Working with the light I have.

I live in a tiny Toronto apartment with terrible light! Which breaks my heart because I love everything else about our home. I just wish I could be facing the other direction. As a result to my crappy light, I find it challenging to photograph my children at home, which is what inspired me to take this breakout workshop! So yesterday I really pushed myself. I had my camera on me all day. I shot at every opportunity working with what I had. I was able to capture this image as we were headed out to get my oldest daughter from school. We're on the 8th floor and she loves looking out the hallway windows at the trains below. The light comes in nicely in these windows but the hallway is painted a yellow colour making the image yellowy green. Anyway, until yesterday I had never used Lightroom. Magic! Now I will always use it! Thanks for the tips and encouragement!

Love it! Those windows provide great directional light. You can really see a WB difference too!

This morning we (hubby and I) had an appointment to visit a neighbouring school here in the Central Highlands of Guatemala.

I brought my camera in hopes of exploring the light and playing...

The morning was super overcast/misty (rainy season fast approaching). The main courtyard of the school is covered in a huge metal structure. There was natural light streaming in from one side and I had a gaggle of girls gathered around me and my camera.

I have been desperately trying to learn manual exposure on my own but have soooooo much to learn. (thankfully, I am registered to begin Mastering Manual Exposure at the end of the month!) So bear with me and my settings. I also haven't learned how to do anything but crop in Lightroom. (so am enjoying observing your process, Meg)

I am not thrilled with the arm or head chops but like the arm framing the smaller girl. There are a few things I "caught" in this photo after loading it onto my computer. The light in her eyes is there! I looked at some of my other shots and that was missing and I could so see the difference.

The next was the same place with one of the teachers. I love the capture and except for the kid running by, like the composition. I do see that she is missing one of her eye "twinkles" and I can see what a difference that makes.

The last has room for lots of improvement but I absolutely love the capture and the potential of it. Life is not easy for Guatemalan women and girls. The look on each girls' face says so much about that, to me. It is the same girl as photo #1 and you can see the two extremes in her expressions.

I live in a country of bad interior lighting so am excited to play and figure this out!

Any feedback or guidance, by others, on these photos would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Beautiful Heather! I also love how the older girls arm is framing the younger one. I love how her hand is gently touching her. The second image the woman has such a genuine smile! Really beautiful. I agree with you. It's underexposed and a tad cool but the emotion there is amazing. I'm so glad you shared and I love how you evaluated your work.

@taraloo I am totally feeling you on this one. We just bought this home in late 2014 and at the time I thought WOW so much light, the more the better! And it is way too much. I wish I knew then what I know now.... and some of my windows are the kind you can't curtain. I am always looking for the nooks and crannies now in this house or shooting before the sun comes up so I can have a darker image. I never dreamed I would wish for less light but... here I am.

I haven't had a chance to really study and try out the different types of light yet. However, my youngest did give me an opportunity to practice with artificial light tonight. She "snuck" into the den to try to play on the computer (something she is ALWAYS trying to do!). I was definitely out of my comfort zone with this, but it was fun. I'm excited to experiment with other types of light this week!

So this breakout is changing so many things for me. We moved into our new home 3 years ago and I absolutely love all the natural light we have. Every morning the first thing I do is open all of the curtains and let in that light. After watching the video last night, this afternoon I closed all the curtains and took this one of my littlest. Not sure what kind of light this is though

I took this in my daughter's room today, she has windows on both sides so it is bright. I have always captured more bright airy images in there so I closed the curtains on one side of the room and also burned the background a bit in processing and I like the change in mood it brings to this image.

    Default Attempt with Rembrandt Light

I decided to try my hand at Rembrandt light. I found a lovely patch of light, early in the morning on the South East side of my house. It was filtering in through the guest bathroom window (someplace I typically wouldn't have been looking) and my sleepy son obliged my request to be my model. He was sitting out in the dark hall, just outside the bathroom door for this shot. All C&C is welcome.

This is beautiful Crystal! I love his shadow on the wall. What a wonderful composition (and of course light)!

Gorgeous Christina! I love the composition of the first image so much! That little pot belly in the last image is adorable. Thank you for sharing!

This is such beautiful, soft light! The shadows on the side of her face are perfect and you can see the catchlight in her eye  You are getting soft, directional light.

Love this Megann! My eye goes right from the beautiful window light to the sweet, chubby hands. There's so much wonderful depth in this image.

This couldn't be more perfect Melissa. The inverted triangle is spot on. I love that the light is highlighting his lashes. This is so soft and painterly. Love the composition and negative space too! Thank you for sharing. This is a great spot of soft light!
