cheeks #1 - over imagination age range - my thoughts
so cheeks #1 is 9, she is in 3rd grade and was a late bloomer to the " everybody is looking at me" club so i am pretty lucky to just now be dealing with this. But she is the oldest child i have done an all about me session for.
My thoughts for this type of age:
SESSION THEME: rockstar/singer/songwriter...she attends a singing school called school of rock and has been writing songs since she could write, no they didnt always make sense but they are starting to make sense now and have real meaning and yes i forgot her songbook like an idiot! She loves taylor swift and carrie underwood she is country but also a little rock and roll
- mistake - i chose a location that was pretty public...it was an area in downtown that has a ton of graffiti walls so there was some pretty decent foot traffic aka spectators! which was bad bad bad because she is VERY in tune with the fact that people are watching and judging.
-FIX- we started the session WAAAAAAy earlier than we needed to to give her time to be embarrassed and then loosen up, it took her a good 35 min at least to relax and forget about anyone but me. my husband and i showed her that there was nothing to be embarrassed about....to the point that we danced and sang and twirled with some of those random people walking by to get good real belly laughs and eventually she loosened up! y'all seriously we made a little block party hahahaha
-FIX 2- minimal props! for two reasons, 1 it didnt make an elaborate scene and embarrass her more and 2 some shoots are best with minimal props, in fact the actual location was one big prop in itself
- IMPORTANT- you have to truly search hard for a theme that they want to be a part of, this age is actually so much easier form this standpoint bc they HAVE AN OPINION and its even more authentic to them! SHE CHOSE ALL OF HER CLOTHES FOR THE SHOOT, i did not want her to wear her cowboy boots i bought fringy minnetonkas for this shoot but i soon realized that her vision and mine weren't the same and that I NEEDED TO GET ON HER PAGE if i wanted this to work! i had to remind myself that THIS IS ABOUT HER NOT ME OR WHAT I WANT HER TO LOOK LIKE
-IMPORTANT- show them images and give continual reassurance that they are doing a perfect job! this age can be insecure and need to know they are doing something right!
-IMPORTANT- this is VERY MUCH AN UNTAPPED MARKET in our industry!!!!! take advantage of it! get comfortable shooting this age range and capitalize on it NOW
